Volunteering Shemà
We welcome, coordinate and accompany people interested in collaborating with the monastery of Sant Benet de Montserrat, through volunteering tasks.
Who can collaborate
Anyone who wants to help and gain experience through volunteering, in a natural environment on the mountain of Montserrat, where you can find spaces of silence for reflection and spirituality.
The tasks, which are various, range from helping in the inn, in the library, or in the archive, as well as making ceramics, computers, working in the forest, in the garden or doing gardening tasks.
The association Shemà
The Shemà Volunteer Association is currently made up of seven people, who are organized into a Board. Two of these people are part of the Sant Benet community. The president is the abbess of the monastery, Maria del Mar Albajar, and Sister Concepcion Badia is also a member, who is the contact person between the Association and the Monastery.
The remaining five people on the Board are five lay women, who have met precisely at the monastery of Sant Benet in courses, retreats or activities that have taken place there. “We have felt welcomed by this community and we want to share our experience with others, making it known and creating bridges of interrelationship with the community”, say the Association.
The idea of creating this Association was born from the Benedictine community itself. “The idea is not ours, but arises from the need of the Sant Benet community to organize the presence of people who were already approaching the monastery asking to volunteer”.
They started working on the assignment in 2018, and the Association was legalized at the end of that year. They currently have a dozen volunteers in the Association. Although few recognize that this has not stopped them from already approving “statutes or creating a Volunteer Plan”.
It was necessary to organize and convey this existing volunteerism and the future that could appear, and it was believed that the best way to do it with face and eyes was through an Association. “Our task is to welcome, coordinate and accompany these people who want to collaborate with the monastery”, they explain.
The community asked these five women because they had been frequenting the monastery for years and the community knew them.
